In what operating conditions can an ammonia circulation pump be used?

In what operating conditions can an ammonia circulation pump be used?

Ammonia circulation pump The suitability for operating conditions is primarily categorized based on the characteristics of the ammonia solution medium (concentration, temperature) and process requirements (circulation, conveyance, pressure). The specific applicable operating conditions are as follows:

  1. Classified by ammonia solution concentration

Low-concentration ammonia solution (≤10%): Suitable for environmental wastewater treatment (ammonia-nitrogen adjustment) and ammonia-water spray circulation in flue gas denitrification systems at power plants. These operating conditions place relatively low demands on pump materials; pumps made of cast iron lined with rubber or ordinary stainless steel (304) can meet the requirements.

Medium-concentration ammonia solution (10%-25%): Suitable for raw material delivery in ammonia preparation circulation at fertilizer plants and in the synthesis of chemical intermediates. It is recommended to use 316L stainless steel pumps with enhanced corrosion resistance, and the seals should be upgraded to single-face mechanical seals.

High-concentration ammonia solution (>25%): Used in ammonia storage tank circulation and ammonia reflux processes in chemical distillation towers. It is essential to use pumps made of fluoropolymer materials (such as F46 or PVDF) paired with double-end-face mechanical seals and a seal flushing system to prevent ammonia vaporization and leakage.

  2. Classified by temperature conditions

Normal operating conditions at ambient temperature (0–40℃): These are the typical operating conditions for most ammonia-water circulation scenarios, such as ammonia-water circulation in denitrification systems and homogenization circulation in ammonia-water storage tanks. All types of pumps are compatible with these conditions.

Medium-to-high temperature conditions (40–100℃): Suitable for ammonia solution heating circulation in chemical reactors and ammonia solution transport with steam tracing. It is necessary to select pumps made of high-temperature-resistant materials and upgrade the seals to fluororubber material to prevent high-temperature aging and leakage.

  3. Classified by process function

Circulating spray operation: The core application is flue gas desulfurization and denitrification systems in the power and steel industries, which demand pumps with high flow rates and stable head pressure to ensure uniform spraying of ammonia solution and thorough reaction with the flue gas.

Tank internal circulation mode: This mode is used for homogeneous circulation in both the upper and lower sections of ammonia storage tanks to prevent concentration stratification. A vertical submersible pump is preferred, as it eliminates the need for priming and features zero leakage, making it ideally suited for installation inside tank vessels.

Pressurized conveying conditions—such as transferring ammonia solution between storage tanks or precisely metering feed into reaction vessels—require pumps with a certain head to meet the demands of long-distance or high-pressure conveying. Horizontal centrifugal pumps are more suitable for these applications.

  4. Special operating conditions

Operating conditions involving ammonia solution containing impurities: If the ammonia solution medium contains a small amount of solid particles (such as mixed chemical waste liquids), it is necessary to select a rubber-lined pump that is wear- and corrosion-resistant, or a wear-resistant stainless steel pump, with the impeller surface treated for enhanced wear resistance.

Negative-pressure sealed operating conditions: Suitable for closed-loop chemical reaction systems, these conditions demand pumps with extremely high sealing performance. They must be equipped with double mechanical seals and a nitrogen purging system to prevent air from entering and disrupting the reaction.
