What are the advantages of a double-suction, mid-open pump compared to other types of pumps?

Double-suction mid-section pump Compared with other types of pumps such as single-suction centrifugal pumps, pipeline pumps, and diaphragm pumps, the core advantages of this pump are concentrated in three key areas: high-flow adaptability, operational stability, and ease of maintenance. The specific advantages are as follows:

  1. High flow rate and high efficiency, suitable for high-displacement operating conditions.

The double-suction impeller adopts a two-end water-inlet design, with an inlet flow area significantly larger than that of a single-suction impeller. Under the same impeller diameter and rotational speed, the flow rate can be increased by more than 30%. At the same time, the fluid flows more uniformly within the impeller, resulting in lower hydraulic losses and achieving a maximum efficiency of up to 94%, which is 3% to 8% higher than that of conventional single-suction centrifugal pumps. Long-term operation can significantly reduce energy consumption.

Compared to small-flow pumps such as pipeline pumps and diaphragm pumps, double-suction split-case pumps are more suitable for high-flow applications like municipal water supply and drainage, power plant circulating water systems, and large-scale agricultural irrigation.

  2. Smooth operation, low vibration and noise, and long service life.

The symmetrical structure of the double-suction impeller can counterbalance most of the radial and axial forces, resulting in a more evenly distributed load on the pump shaft. This leads to a significant reduction in vibration during operation and lowers the noise level by 5 to 10 dB(A) compared to a single-suction centrifugal pump.

Load balancing also helps reduce wear on components such as bearings and shaft seals. Combined with the sealing design of the split-case pump housing, this reduces the equipment’s failure rate and extends its service life by 2 to 3 years compared to conventional single-suction pumps.

  3. Easy maintenance and low repair costs

The pump casing features a horizontal split along the axis, so during maintenance, there’s no need to disconnect the inlet and outlet pipelines—simply opening the pump cover allows for easy replacement of wear parts such as the impeller, sealing rings, and shaft sleeves. Maintenance time is reduced by more than 60% compared to single-suction centrifugal pumps.

Compared to pipeline pumps and submersible pumps that require complete disassembly, the maintenance of double-suction split-case pumps is more suitable for the rapid emergency repairs needed in industrial settings.

  4. Stronger cavitation resistance and broad operational adaptability.

The double-suction impeller features low inlet flow velocity and uniform pressure distribution, resulting in a lower required net positive suction head (NPSHr) compared to single-suction pumps with the same parameters. This allows it to operate stably under conditions with higher medium temperatures and poorer suction conditions, reducing the likelihood of cavitation damage.

Meanwhile, the pump body can be made from a variety of materials, including cast iron, stainless steel, and wear-resistant alloys, meeting diverse pumping requirements for clean water, wastewater, and mildly corrosive media.

  5. Flexible installation, suitable for a variety of scenarios.

Both the suction port and the discharge port are located at the bottom of the pump body and arranged horizontally, perpendicular to the axis. This design enables horizontal installation and makes it suitable for various installation spaces, such as industrial plants and pump stations.

Compared to vertical pumps, horizontally mounted ones Double-suction mid-section pump Lower center of gravity, enhanced operational stability, and no need for additional foundation reinforcement.
