High-efficiency, Energy-saving, Self-Balancing Multistage Pump

Product Advantages

The highly efficient, energy-saving, self-balancing multi-stage centrifugal pump is a product independently developed by our company, Zhonglian Pump Industry, leveraging our proprietary intellectual property. It combines the features of the Omega series double-suction pumps and represents a next-generation design, serving as an upgrade to conventional multi-stage pumps that rely on balance disc mechanisms. On February 21, 2014, the "Self-Balancing" pump trademark was officially registered under registration certificate No. 11522619.

Why has Zhonglian Pump Industry embarked on the path of developing highly efficient, energy-saving, self-balancing multistage pumps?

Traditional multistage pumps are centrifugal pumps that utilize balancing devices such as balance discs, balance drums, and balance rings to counteract axial forces. Since their introduction, these pumps have benefited from relatively mature technology and high reliability, making them widely adopted in industrial applications. However, they do come with certain drawbacks, including easy wear of components, frequent replacement of the balance disc, and reduced efficiency—issues that often cause considerable inconvenience for users during operation.

  1. The balancing system is prone to failure: Various factors, such as axial movement and the structural design of the system, balance disc, and balance rings, lead to mutual friction and wear. This causes the impeller to shift toward the suction end (commonly known as "one-sided movement"), intensifying friction between the impeller and the wear ring, between the impeller and guide vanes, and within the middle section. As operating time increases, the balancing effect gradually deteriorates, creating a vicious cycle.

  2. Low pump efficiency and substandard parameters: The actual operating parameters of conventional multistage pumps fail to meet the design specifications. Typically, these pumps achieve only 80-85% of their intended performance. For instance, the D155-67X9 multistage pump delivers a flow rate of just 133 m³/h at its rated head—22 m³/h less than the designed flow rate.

  3. Short Mean Time Between Failures and High Maintenance Costs: With a short mean time between failures, the equipment requires frequent replacement of components such as balance discs, balance rings, and rotor parts. Even excluding downtime losses, the cost of these spare parts alone can already reach 40-50% of the original equipment purchase price—making this a critical weakness in cost control.

  4. Short lifespan of mechanical seals: Due to the inability to completely eliminate axial forces, the pump experiences an axial movement of 3–7 mm during operation, causing the rotor to shift slightly from side to side. Typically, the compression of the mechanical seal remains within 5 mm. However, when the shaft moves toward one end, the dynamic and stationary rings at the opposite end may lose proper contact, leading to seal failure and severe leakage. This issue not only compromises the seal’s performance but also results in frequent replacements of the mechanical seal.

  5. Limited application scope: The balancing system operates unstably, the mechanical seal cannot be properly positioned, leading to a high failure rate—making it unable to function normally even under slightly adverse operating conditions; for example, when conveying mine drainage containing particulates.

Therefore, in response to the issues mentioned above, Zhonglian Pump Industry has continuously explored and conducted research, integrating its deep knowledge and cutting-edge technologies from the pump industry. Building upon the foundation of conventional multistage pumps, the company has refined and improved the design, ultimately developing a new type of self-balancing multistage pump through numerous experimental trials. This innovative self-balancing multistage pump boasts remarkable advantages: high efficiency, energy savings, and environmental friendliness. Notably, it eliminates traditional axial force balancing mechanisms such as balance discs or balance drums, significantly boosting the efficiency of conventional multistage pumps while reducing power consumption and wear rates.

As shown in the table above, compared to conventional multistage pumps, the self-balanced multistage pump primarily offers the following advantages:

1. Efficiency is improved, shaft power decreases, resulting in lower cost per unit of work performed and reduced long-term operating expenses, with significant energy-saving benefits.

2. Without a balancing device, it has fewer wear parts, boasts long trouble-free operation periods, features extended maintenance intervals, and incurs low maintenance costs.

3. Although the initial purchase cost of the water pump is slightly higher, the subsequent operating and maintenance costs are significantly reduced. After weighing all factors, choosing a self-balancing multistage pump is the right decision.

Summary of Features for High-Efficiency, Energy-Saving, Self-Balancing Multi-Stage Centrifugal Pumps

  1) New Structure

The self-balancing multistage pump leverages internationally advanced computer-aided design software combined with modern manufacturing techniques to optimize the pump's hydraulic model and structural design. It eliminates the need for an axial force balancing mechanism by employing a symmetrical arrangement of forward and reverse impellers. As a result, the axial forces generated by each stage's symmetrically placed impellers automatically cancel out, enabling automatic axial thrust balance within the pump chamber without relying on a balance disc structure.

  2) High Efficiency and Energy Saving

Due to the absence of a balancing device, the pump rotor eliminates friction from the balancing system and axial pulsations, preventing any leakage of balancing water. This reduces volumetric losses, resulting in actual performance parameters that surpass design requirements. Compared to conventional multistage pumps, efficiency is improved by an average of 2% to 5%, while shaft power consumption is lowered, ultimately enhancing overall operational efficiency and reducing running costs.

  3) Safe and Reliable

This type of pump eliminates axial force-balancing mechanisms such as balance discs, instead employing a symmetrically arranged impeller design. As a result, the axial thrust generated during operation is automatically self-balanced, completely preventing failures in the balancing system caused by changing operating conditions—failures that could lead to reduced efficiency, increased shaft power, declining pressure, heightened noise and vibration, component damage, rotor seizure, or even shaft breakage. Moreover, the pump shaft remains consistently under tensile stress, significantly enhancing both the rigidity of the pump rotor and its critical speed. This not only improves the smoothness and reliability of the water pump's operation but also boosts the overall safety factor of the pump, ultimately extending its service life.

  4) Low maintenance costs

The rotor components exhibit excellent alignment, ensuring the impeller performs only circular motion without rubbing against other parts. As a result, the pump operates reliably for extended periods, requires few wear-and-tear components, boasts long maintenance intervals, and incurs low repair costs.

  5) Good sealing performance

Since there is no axial movement, when using mechanical seals, the sealing surfaces maintain excellent contact, completely overcoming the critical issue of poor contact between the dynamic and static ring friction surfaces in traditional multistage pumps during axial movement—leading to seal failure. This significantly extends the service life of the mechanical seal, ensures superior sealing performance, and achieves a leak-proof, drip-free operation.

  6) High-Temperature and High-Pressure Resistance

The bearing housing structure and lubrication method have been redesigned: a ball bearing is used at the low-pressure end, while a back-to-back angular contact bearing is employed at the high-pressure end (the tail end). The lubrication system utilizes splash-type lubrication—using either 30-40# machine oil or turbine oil—and eliminates the need for a separate dilute-oil station. This unique structural design ensures that the core assembly, comprising the bearing and rotor, remains unaffected by temperature fluctuations, maintaining excellent uniformity and symmetry even during thermal expansion and contraction. As a result, the mechanical seals are precisely positioned, and the bearing lubrication system operates optimally. Together with the advanced auxiliary cooling system, the pump can withstand temperature extremes up to 250°C. Additionally, this innovative structural design enables the pump to achieve a single-stage head of up to 1.5 MPa (equivalent to 150 meters), with an outlet pressure capable of reaching 15 MPa (total head ≥ 1500 meters).

  7) Wide range of applications

Without small gaps in the balancing mechanism, the pump boasts strong media-passing capability and is suitable for a wide range of harsh operating conditions. As a result, it has a broad application scope, widely used in mines, factories, urban construction projects, power plants, hydraulic engineering, and other fields—serving as a versatile pump for conveying various media, such as clean water and wastewater, under diverse operational conditions.
