Structural Features of S-Type Horizontal Single-Stage Double-Suction Split-Casing Centrifugal Pump
Compared with other pumps of the same type, the S-type horizontal double-suction pump features a long service life, high efficiency, reasonable structural design, low operating costs, and ease of installation and maintenance. It is an ideal pump for use in fire protection, air conditioning, chemical processing, water treatment, and other industries. The pump body is designed for working pressures of 1.6 MPa and 2.0 MPa.
The inlet and outlet flanges of the pump body are both located on the lower pump casing, allowing the rotor to be removed without disassembling the system piping, thus facilitating maintenance. Some pump bodies feature a dual-flow-channel design to reduce radial forces, thereby extending the service life of mechanical seals and bearings. The hydraulic design of the S-pump impeller incorporates advanced CFD technology, significantly improving the pump’s hydraulic efficiency. The impeller undergoes dynamic balancing to ensure smooth operation of the S-pump. The shaft has a relatively thick diameter and short bearing spacing, which reduces shaft deflection and prolongs the service life of both mechanical seals and bearings. The shaft sleeve can be made from a variety of different materials to prevent corrosion and wear of the shaft; moreover, the shaft sleeve is replaceable. A replaceable wear ring is installed between the pump casing and the impeller to protect both the middle-open pump casing and the impeller from wear. This wear ring is easy to replace, resulting in low maintenance costs while maintaining proper operating clearances and high operational efficiency. The pump can be equipped with either packing seals or mechanical seals, and the sealing device can be replaced without removing the pump cover. The bearing housing features a unique design that allows the bearings to be lubricated either with grease or thin oil. The designed service life of these bearings exceeds 100,000 hours, and they can also be fitted with double-row thrust bearings or sealed bearings.
The suction and discharge ports of the S-type horizontal double-suction centrifugal pump are both located below the pump shaft axis and are oriented horizontally, perpendicular to the shaft axis. During maintenance, simply lifting the pump cover allows all components to be removed without having to disassemble the motor or piping.
Middle-open pump It mainly consists of a pump body, pump cover, shaft, impeller, sealing ring, shaft sleeve, bearing assembly, and sealing assembly. The shaft is made of high-quality carbon structural steel, while the materials for other components are generally cast iron. The impeller, sealing ring, and shaft sleeve are wear-prone parts.
Materials: Depending on the user’s specific requirements, the materials for S-type double-suction centrifugal pumps can include copper, cast iron, ductile iron, 316 stainless steel, 416 stainless steel, duplex steel, Hastelloy, Monel alloy, titanium alloy, and Alloy 20, among others.
Rotation direction: When viewed from the motor end toward the pump, the “S” series pumps rotate counterclockwise, with the suction port on the left and the discharge port on the right. When the pump rotates clockwise, the suction port is on the right and the discharge port is on the left.
Package scope: The package includes pumps, motors, baseplates, couplings, and inlet/outlet short pipes.
Installation of S-type horizontal single-stage double-suction split-case centrifugal pump
1. Check that the S-type split-case pump and motor are free of damage.
2. The installation height of the pump, plus the hydraulic losses in the suction piping and its velocity head, must not exceed the allowable net positive suction head (NPSH) value specified in the manufacturer’s data sheet. The foundation dimensions shall conform to the installation dimensions of the pump unit.
3. Installation sequence:
① Place the pump on a concrete foundation with anchor bolts embedded in it. Adjust the level by using wedge-shaped shims placed between the pump and the foundation, and then tighten the anchor bolts appropriately to prevent any movement.
② Pour concrete between the foundation and the pump base.
③ After the concrete has fully hardened, tighten the anchor bolts and recheck the levelness of the S-type split-case pump.
④ Correct the concentricity between the motor shaft and the pump shaft, ensuring that the two shafts are aligned in a straight line. The permissible tolerance for coaxiality on the outer surfaces of the two shafts is 0.1 mm, and the permissible tolerance for unevenness of the end-face clearance around the circumference is 0.3 mm. (After connecting the inlet and outlet pipelines and conducting a trial run, re-check the alignment once more; the results should still meet the above requirements.)
⑤ After confirming that the motor’s rotation direction matches the pump’s rotation direction, install the coupling and connecting pins.
4. The inlet and outlet pipelines should be supported by separate brackets and must not rely on the pump body for support.
5. The joint between the pump and the piping system must ensure good air tightness. In particular, the inlet piping must be rigorously sealed to prevent any air leakage, and the installation should not allow any air pockets to form.
6. If the S-type split-case pump is installed above the inlet water level, a foot valve can generally be installed to facilitate priming and start-up. Alternatively, a vacuum priming method can also be employed.
7. Between the pump and the discharge pipeline, a gate valve and a check valve are generally required (not necessary for head heights less than 20 meters). The check valve should be installed behind the gate valve.
The installation method described above refers to pump units that do not come with a common base.
When installing a pump equipped with a common base, use wedge-shaped shims to adjust the level of the unit by aligning the base with the concrete foundation. Then, pour concrete between them. The installation principles and requirements are the same as those for units not equipped with a common base.
Starting, Stopping, and Operating the S-Type Horizontal Single-Stage Double-Suction Split-Casing Centrifugal Pump
1. Starting and Stopping:
① Before starting, rotate the pump’s rotor—it should turn smoothly and evenly.
② Close the outlet gate valve and fill the pump with water (if there is no foot valve, use a vacuum pump to evacuate and draw in water). Ensure that the pump is completely filled with water and free of any air pockets.
③ If the pump is equipped with a vacuum gauge or pressure gauge, close the stopcock connecting the gauge to the pump before starting the motor. Once the pump reaches normal speed, open the stopcock. Then gradually open the discharge gate valve. If the flow rate is too high, slightly close the gate valve to adjust it; conversely, if the flow rate is too low, open the gate valve further.
④ Tighten the compression nut on the packing gland evenly until the liquid starts to leak out in drops, while paying close attention to any temperature rise in the packing chamber.
⑤ When stopping the pump, first close the stopcocks on the vacuum gauge and pressure gauge, as well as the gate valve on the discharge pipeline. Then, turn off the motor power supply. If the ambient temperature drops, open the square screw plug at the lower end of the pump body to drain any remaining water, thus preventing the pump body from freezing and cracking.
⑥ When the pump is to be discontinued for an extended period, disassemble it, wipe all parts dry, apply rust-preventive oil to the machined surfaces, and store it properly.
2. Operation:
① The maximum temperature of the pump bearing shall not exceed 75℃.
② The amount of calcium-based grease used for lubricating bearings should ideally occupy between 1/3 and 1/2 of the bearing housing space.
③ When the packing wears out, you can tighten the packing gland appropriately. If the packing material has deteriorated excessively, it should be replaced.
④ Regularly inspect the coupling components and pay attention to the temperature rise of the motor bearings.
⑤ During operation, if you notice any noise or other abnormal sounds, you should immediately stop the machine, check the cause, and eliminate the issue.
⑥ Do not arbitrarily increase the pump’s rotational speed; however, you may reduce the rotational speed for operation. For example, if the rated rotational speed of this pump model is n, the flow rate is Q, the head is H, and the shaft power is N, and you reduce the rotational speed to n1, the corresponding flow rate, head, and shaft power after reduction will be Q1, H1, and N1, respectively. The relationships among these parameters can be converted using the following formulas: Q1 = (n1/n)Q H1 = (n1/n)² H N1 = (n1/n)³ N
Assembly and Disassembly of S-Type Horizontal Single-Stage Double-Suction Split-Casing Centrifugal Pump
1. Assemble the rotor components: First, mount the impeller, shaft sleeve, shaft sleeve nut, packing sleeve, packing ring, packing gland, water stop ring, and bearing assembly onto the pump shaft. Then, slide on the double-suction sealing ring and finally install the coupling.
2. Install the rotor assembly onto the pump body, adjust the axial position of the impeller to the center of the double-suction sealing ring, and secure it in place. Then, tighten the bearing housing cover together with the set screws.
3. Install the packing, place the gasket between the split surfaces, and then secure the pump cover by inserting and tightening the pin at the end of the screw rod. Next, tighten the pump cover nuts, and finally install the packing gland. However, do not compress the packing too tightly—excessive compression can cause the sleeve to overheat and increase power consumption. On the other hand, do not compress it too loosely either; if the packing is too loose, liquid leakage will increase significantly, reducing the pump’s efficiency.
After assembly is complete, manually rotate the pump shaft. There should be no rubbing or scraping, and the rotation should be smooth, light, and uniform. To disassemble, simply reverse the above-mentioned assembly sequence.

Q
What is your typical delivery time?
A
Models in stock can be shipped the next day at the latest. All others are custom-made, with lead times generally ranging from 7 to 90 days depending on the product size and project specifics. Please contact our sales manager for details: 0731-88632200 。
Q
Do you have centrifugal pumps in stock?
A
Centrifugal pumps come in numerous models and configurations. Except for a small number of high-volume, standard models that are in stock, the vast majority are not stocked and are customized products. We need to select a pump based on your site's flow rate, head, media temperature, pH value, and installation conditions, etc., to determine the pump model and configuration before we can submit an order to the factory for production.
Q
What information should I provide when requesting a quote?
A
Generally, to obtain an accurate quotation, we recommend providing us with the following information: pump flow rate, head, on-site operating voltage and frequency, temperature, pH value, and solid particle content of the fluid being conveyed, and on-site installation conditions (horizontal or vertical installation), etc.
If you are not sure, don't worry, our business managers will assist you in determining this.
Q
What products do you mainly produce?
A
Zhonglian Pump Industry manufactures various large industrial centrifugal pumps. Main products include: self-balancing multi-stage pumps, multi-stage centrifugal pumps, single-stage centrifugal pumps, split-case pumps, chemical pumps, submersible pumps, pipeline pumps, long-shaft pumps, condensate pumps, etc.
Q
Why is it so slow to get a price quote?
A
Because centrifugal pumps are non-standard customized products with many models, the price range is also very large. Even for the same model, the price difference is also very large due to different materials and configurations. Taking the most common water pump accessory—the impeller—as an example, the price of a stainless steel impeller is several times that of a cast iron impeller. Therefore, we need to clarify the relevant information to give you an accurate price. Normally, if you provide relatively comprehensive information, we can quote within 5 minutes.
