Overview of Mechanical Seals:
A mechanical seal is a device designed to prevent fluid leakage. It consists of at least one pair of end faces that are perpendicular to the axis of rotation; these faces maintain contact and slide relative to each other under the combined action of fluid pressure, the elastic force (or magnetic force) of a compensating mechanism, and the cooperation of auxiliary seals. When the elastic-loading mechanism and auxiliary seals are made of metallic bellows, the mechanical seal is referred to as a metal bellows seal. In light-duty seals, rubber bellows are sometimes used as auxiliary seals. Since rubber bellows have limited elastic force, they typically require an additional spring to provide sufficient loading force. The term “mechanical seal” is often abbreviated by people as “mech seal.”
Mechanical seal components:
1. The main components of mechanical seals are the rotating ring and the stationary ring.
2. Auxiliary sealing elements: Sealing rings (including O-rings, X-rings, U-rings, wedge-shaped rings, rectangular flexible graphite rings, PTFE-coated rubber O-rings, etc.).
3. Elastic compensation mechanism: spring, push ring; spring seat and key or various screws;
4. Classified into single-face, double-single-face, balanced type, unbalanced type, arbitrary rotation direction, and fixed rotation direction.
Mechanical Seal Principle:
A mechanical seal is a shaft sealing device that relies on one or more pairs of end faces, which slide relative to each other perpendicularly to the shaft, to maintain contact under the action of fluid pressure and the elastic force (or magnetic force) of a compensation mechanism, combined with auxiliary seals, thereby preventing leakage.
The common mechanical seal structure consists of components including the stationary ring (static ring) 1, the rotating ring (dynamic ring) 2, an elastic element 3, a spring seat 4, a set screw 5, an auxiliary sealing ring for the rotating ring 6, and an auxiliary sealing ring for the stationary ring 8. A anti-rotation pin 7 is fixed to the press cover 9 to prevent the stationary ring from rotating.
Rotating rings and stationary rings are often further classified as compensating rings or non-compensating rings, depending on whether they have axial compensation capability.
