Overview of Diaphragm Couplings:

 Diaphragm coupling image

A diaphragm coupling is a type of flexible coupling that uses thin spring-like diaphragms connected to two halves of the coupling via bolts or other fastening methods, thereby achieving an elastic connection between two shafts. Diaphragm couplings are frequently used in centrifugal pumps to connect the pump to the motor. A diaphragm coupling typically consists of at least one diaphragm and two hub sleeves. The diaphragm is securely fastened to the hub sleeves by pins, ensuring that it remains tightly in place without loosening or causing backlash between the diaphragm and the hub sleeves. Some manufacturers offer couplings with two diaphragms, while others provide couplings with three diaphragms, each featuring one or two rigid elements positioned in the middle, with the diaphragms connected to the hub sleeves on either side. The key difference between single-diaphragm and double-diaphragm couplings lies in their ability to accommodate various types of misalignment. Because single-diaphragm couplings require the diaphragm to undergo complex bending, they are less well-suited for handling eccentricity. In contrast, double-diaphragm couplings can bend simultaneously in different directions, thus effectively compensating for eccentricity.

Diaphragm Coupling Structure:

A diaphragm coupling consists of at least one diaphragm and two hub sleeves. The diaphragm is securely fastened to the hub sleeves by pins, and it generally does not loosen or cause backlash between the diaphragm and the hub sleeves. Some manufacturers offer couplings with two diaphragms, while others provide couplings with three diaphragms, each featuring one or two rigid elements in the middle, with the diaphragms connected to the hub sleeves on either side.

Characteristics of diaphragm couplings:

The diaphragm coupling exhibits characteristics somewhat similar to those of a bellows coupling; in fact, the way these couplings transmit torque is quite comparable. The diaphragm itself is very thin, so it bends easily when subjected to relative displacement loads, enabling it to accommodate misalignments of up to 1.5 degrees while simultaneously minimizing bearing loads in servo systems. Diaphragm couplings are commonly used in servo systems. While they offer excellent torsional stiffness, their performance is slightly inferior to that of bellows couplings. On the other hand, diaphragm couplings are highly compact and delicate; if mishandled or improperly installed during use, they can easily be damaged. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that any misalignment remains within the coupling’s allowable operating range. Selecting the right type of coupling is a critical step in making the most of its performance, and the choice of coupling type should be carefully considered already at the design stage.

Correct Selection of Diaphragm Couplings:

   1. A diaphragm coupling consists of at least one diaphragm and two shaft sleeves. The diaphragm is securely fastened to the shaft sleeves by pins, ensuring that it will not loosen or cause backlash between the diaphragm and the shaft sleeves. Some manufacturers offer couplings with two diaphragms, while others provide couplings with three diaphragms, each featuring one or two rigid elements in the middle, with the diaphragms connected to the shaft sleeves on either side.

  2. The diaphragm coupling exhibits characteristics somewhat similar to those of a bellows coupling; in fact, the way these couplings transmit torque is quite comparable. Since the diaphragm itself is very thin, it bends easily when subjected to relative displacement loads, enabling it to accommodate misalignments of up to 1.5 degrees while simultaneously minimizing bearing loads in servo systems.

  3. Diaphragm couplings are commonly used in servo systems. While diaphragms offer excellent torque stiffness, they are slightly inferior to bellows couplings.

  4. On the other hand, diaphragm couplings are highly sophisticated; if misused or improperly installed during operation, they can easily be damaged. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that any misalignment remains within the allowable range for the coupling’s normal operation.

  5. Adjust the model according to the shaft diameter:

The initially selected coupling dimensions for the bearing coupling—namely, the shaft hole diameter d and the shaft hole length L—must meet the shaft diameter requirements of both the driving and driven ends. Otherwise, the coupling specifications will need to be adjusted according to the shaft diameter d.

It is common for the shaft diameters of the driving and driven ends to differ. When the torque and rotational speed are the same but the shaft diameters of the driving and driven ends differ, the coupling model should be selected based on the larger shaft diameter. In newly designed transmission systems, it is recommended to choose one of the seven shaft-hole types specified in GBT 3852; among these, the J1 type shaft-hole is particularly recommended to enhance versatility and interchangeability. The length of the shaft hole shall comply with the provisions of the bearing-coupling product standards.

Applications of diaphragm couplings:

Widely used in shaft-driven systems of various mechanical devices, such as pumps (especially high-power and chemical pumps), fans, compressors, hydraulic machinery, petroleum equipment, printing machinery, textile machinery, chemical machinery, mining machinery, metallurgical machinery, aerospace (helicopters), high-speed propulsion systems for ships, steam turbines, piston-type power machinery drive systems, tracked vehicles, and high-speed, high-power mechanical drive systems for generator sets—after dynamic balancing, their application in high-speed shaft drive systems has become quite common.

Q

What is your typical delivery time?

A

Models in stock can be shipped the next day at the latest. All others are custom-made, with lead times generally ranging from 7 to 90 days depending on the product size and project specifics. Please contact our sales manager for details: 0731-88632200 。

Q

Do you have centrifugal pumps in stock?

A

Centrifugal pumps come in numerous models and configurations. Except for a small number of high-volume, standard models that are in stock, the vast majority are not stocked and are customized products. We need to select a pump based on your site's flow rate, head, media temperature, pH value, and installation conditions, etc., to determine the pump model and configuration before we can submit an order to the factory for production.

Q

What information should I provide when requesting a quote?

A

Generally, to obtain an accurate quotation, we recommend providing us with the following information: pump flow rate, head, on-site operating voltage and frequency, temperature, pH value, and solid particle content of the fluid being conveyed, and on-site installation conditions (horizontal or vertical installation), etc.

If you are not sure, don't worry, our business managers will assist you in determining this.

Q

What products do you mainly produce?

A

Zhonglian Pump Industry manufactures various large industrial centrifugal pumps. Main products include: self-balancing multi-stage pumps, multi-stage centrifugal pumps, single-stage centrifugal pumps, split-case pumps, chemical pumps, submersible pumps, pipeline pumps, long-shaft pumps, condensate pumps, etc.

Q

Could you help me with the selection?

A

Certainly! If the water pump model is not selected accurately, there will be big problems. If you choose a smaller one, it won't meet your needs; if you choose a larger one, it will waste electricity and fuel, increasing your costs.

Q

Why is it so slow to get a price quote?

A

Because centrifugal pumps are non-standard customized products with many models, the price range is also very large. Even for the same model, the price difference is also very large due to different materials and configurations. Taking the most common water pump accessory—the impeller—as an example, the price of a stainless steel impeller is several times that of a cast iron impeller. Therefore, we need to clarify the relevant information to give you an accurate price. Normally, if you provide relatively comprehensive information, we can quote within 5 minutes.
