Structural Description of Type D Horizontal Multistage Centrifugal Pump

The D-type horizontal multistage pump is a multi-stage, segmented design. Its suction port is located on the inlet section and faces horizontally, while its discharge port is oriented vertically upward on the water section. The head of the pump can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the number of pump stages according to operational requirements. The performance of the pump is significantly affected by how well it is assembled—especially the alignment between the outlet of each impeller and the centerlines of the guide vanes. Even a slight deviation in this alignment can lead to reduced flow rate, lower head, and decreased efficiency. Therefore, utmost care must be taken during inspection and assembly.

The main components of the D-type horizontal multistage pump include: the suction section, the middle section, the discharge section, the impeller, the guide vanes and baffle plates, the discharge-section guide vanes, the shaft, the sealing ring, the balance ring, the shaft sleeve, the tail cover, and the bearing housing.

The inlet section, middle section, guide vane baffle, outlet guide vanes, outlet section, and tail cover are all made of cast iron and together form the pump’s working chamber.

The impeller of the D-type horizontal centrifugal pump is made of high-quality cast iron and features blades inside. Liquid enters axially from one side only. Due to the unequal pressure acting on the front and back of the impeller, an axial force is inevitably generated. This axial force is borne by a balance disc. The impeller undergoes static balancing tests during manufacturing.

The shaft is made of high-quality carbon steel and features an impeller mounted in the middle. It is secured to the shaft using a key, a shaft sleeve, and a shaft sleeve nut. One end of the shaft is fitted with a coupling component that connects directly to the motor.

The sealing ring for the D-type horizontal centrifugal water pump is made of cast iron to prevent high-pressure water from leaking back into the suction section. It is fixed separately above the suction section and the middle section. As a wear-prone component, it can be replaced with a spare part once worn out.

The balance ring, made of cast iron, is fixed to the discharge section and, together with the balance weight, forms the balancing device.

The balance disc of the D-type horizontal centrifugal pump is made of wear-resistant cast iron. It is mounted on the shaft, located between the discharge section and the tail cover, and serves to balance the axial forces.

The shaft sleeve, made of cast iron, is located in the stuffing box area. It serves to secure the impeller and protect the pump shaft. As a wear-prone component, it can be replaced with a spare part once worn out.

The bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing lubricated with calcium-based grease.

The packing serves as a seal, preventing air from entering and excessive liquid from leaking out. The packing seal consists of a packing chamber located on the suction section and the tail cover, a packing gland, packing rings, and packing material itself. A small amount of high-pressure water flows into the packing chamber to provide a water seal. The tightness of the packing must be just right—neither too tight nor too loose—such that the liquid seeps out drop by drop. If the packing is too tight, the shaft sleeve is prone to overheating and power consumption increases. If the packing is too loose, the pump’s efficiency will decline due to excessive liquid leakage.

D-Type Horizontal Multistage Centrifugal Pump: Installation, Startup, Operation, and Shutdown

(1) Assembly Sequence:

1) Secure the sealing rings tightly onto the inlet section and the guide vane baffle, respectively.

2) Fit the guide vanes onto the middle sections, then install the guide vane baffles onto all the middle sections.

3) Pass the assembled shaft sleeves A and B through the water inlet section and push them into the impellers. Place a layer of paper gasket on the middle section, then install the middle section. Next, push in the second impeller and repeat the above steps until all the impellers and middle sections have been installed.

4) Install the balance ring, balance sleeve, and outlet-section guide vanes onto the outlet section separately.

5) Attach the discharge section to the middle section, then use tension bolts to securely fasten the inlet section, middle section, and discharge section together.

6) Install the balancing disc and bushing B (this part is not included for 50DB pumps).

7) Install the paper gasket onto the tail cover, then attach the tail cover to the water outlet section. Next, sequentially install the packing and packing ring, as well as the packing gland, into the packing chambers of both the water inlet section and the tail cover.

8) Install the bearing housing separately onto the inlet section and the tail cover, and secure them with bolts.

9) Insert the bearing locating sleeve and ball bearings, then secure them with a nut.

10) Apply an appropriate amount of grease into the bearing housing, place the paper gasket over the bearing cap, and then secure the bearing cap to the bearing housing using screws.

11) Install the coupling assembly, the air bleed cock, and all square plugs.

Disassembly should be performed in the reverse order of assembly.

(2) Installation:

1. Preparations before installation.

1) Check the pump and the motor.

2) Prepare tools and lifting equipment.

3) Inspect the machine’s foundation.

2. Installation sequence:

1) The entire pump set is delivered to the site, and the motor has already been installed on the base. When leveling the base, there is no need to remove the pump and motor.

2) Place the base on the foundation, insert wedge-shaped shims near the anchor bolts, and raise the base by approximately 20–40 millimeters, preparing it for leveling and subsequent filling with grout.

3) Use a level to check the horizontality of the base. After leveling, tighten the anchor bolts and fill the base with cement mortar.

4) After the cement has dried and hardened for 3 to 4 days, check the levelness again.

5) Clean off any dirt from the supporting surface of the base, as well as from the flat surfaces of the pump feet and motor feet; then place the pump and motor onto the base.

6) Adjust the pump shaft to be水平. After leveling it, tighten the nuts appropriately to prevent any movement. Once the adjustment is complete, install the motor. Place iron plates under any areas that are not level, and leave a certain gap between the pump and the coupling.

7) Place a straightedge on the coupling and check whether the pump shaft centerline coincides with the motor shaft centerline. If they are not aligned, place thin shims under the feet of either the motor or the pump to ensure that the outer circles of the two couplings are flush with the straightedge. Then, remove the thin iron shims and replace them with a single, planed iron plate. Finally, recheck the installation condition.

To check the installation accuracy, use feeler gauges at several opposite positions to measure the gap between the two coupling planes. The difference between the maximum and minimum gaps around the entire circumference of the coupling planes must not exceed 0.3 millimeters, and the difference between the upper and lower or left and right positions along the centerlines at both ends must not exceed 0.1 millimeter.

(3) Starting and Stopping:

1) Wipe off all the oil from the shaft and other oil-coated parts.

2) Clean the bearings and oil chamber with gasoline, then wipe them clean with cotton gauze.

3) Add calcium-based grease into the bearing housing.

4) Once the test is successful, check whether the motor’s rotation direction is correct. Be careful not to allow the pump to rotate and loosen the nut, then start the motor.

5) Pour water into the pump or prime the pump with water.

6) Close the valve on the discharge pipe and the pressure gauge cock.

7) After the above process is completed, start the motor and open the pressure gauge cock.

8) When the pump is running at its normal speed, the pressure gauge should indicate the appropriate pressure. Then, open the vacuum gauge’s rotary base and gradually open the gate valve on the drain line until the desired pressure is reached.

9) When stopping the pump, slowly close the gate valve on the discharge pipeline, close the vacuum gauge cock, and stop the motor. Then, close the pressure gauge cock.

10) When the pump is to be discontinued for an extended period, it should be disassembled. Wipe off any water from the pump parts and apply anti-rust oil to the sliding surfaces before storing it properly.

(4) Operation:

1) Pay attention to the temperature of the pump bearing, which should not exceed the ambient temperature by more than 35 degrees Celsius, but must not exceed 75 degrees Celsius.

2) The normal leakage rate within the stuffing box should be no more than 15 milliliters per minute, and the tightness of the packing gland should be adjusted accordingly at all times.

3) Regularly inspect the coupling and pay attention to the temperature rise of the motor bearings.

4) During operation, if any noise or unusual sound occurs, stop the machine immediately and inspect the cause.

Q

What is your typical delivery time?

A

Models in stock can be shipped the next day at the latest. All others are custom-made, with lead times generally ranging from 7 to 90 days depending on the product size and project specifics. Please contact our sales manager for details: 0731-88632200 。

Q

Do you have centrifugal pumps in stock?

A

Centrifugal pumps come in numerous models and configurations. Except for a small number of high-volume, standard models that are in stock, the vast majority are not stocked and are customized products. We need to select a pump based on your site's flow rate, head, media temperature, pH value, and installation conditions, etc., to determine the pump model and configuration before we can submit an order to the factory for production.

Q

What information should I provide when requesting a quote?

A

Generally, to obtain an accurate quotation, we recommend providing us with the following information: pump flow rate, head, on-site operating voltage and frequency, temperature, pH value, and solid particle content of the fluid being conveyed, and on-site installation conditions (horizontal or vertical installation), etc.

If you are not sure, don't worry, our business managers will assist you in determining this.

Q

What products do you mainly produce?

A

Zhonglian Pump Industry manufactures various large industrial centrifugal pumps. Main products include: self-balancing multi-stage pumps, multi-stage centrifugal pumps, single-stage centrifugal pumps, split-case pumps, chemical pumps, submersible pumps, pipeline pumps, long-shaft pumps, condensate pumps, etc.

Q

Could you help me with the selection?

A

Certainly! If the water pump model is not selected accurately, there will be big problems. If you choose a smaller one, it won't meet your needs; if you choose a larger one, it will waste electricity and fuel, increasing your costs.

Q

Why is it so slow to get a price quote?

A

Because centrifugal pumps are non-standard customized products with many models, the price range is also very large. Even for the same model, the price difference is also very large due to different materials and configurations. Taking the most common water pump accessory—the impeller—as an example, the price of a stainless steel impeller is several times that of a cast iron impeller. Therefore, we need to clarify the relevant information to give you an accurate price. Normally, if you provide relatively comprehensive information, we can quote within 5 minutes.
