Troubleshooting for GC-Type Horizontal Multistage Boiler Feed Pumps
Failure |
Reason |
Solution |
1. The pump is not drawing water, and the pointers on the pressure gauge and vacuum gauge are fluctuating violently. |
There isn't enough water being pumped into the pump, and there are leaks in the pipes and instruments. |
Inject more into the pump and tighten the area where the leak is occurring. |
2. The pump is not drawing water, and the vacuum gauge indicates a high degree of vacuum. |
The bottom valve is not open, or it’s already blocked; the suction pipe has too much resistance, and the suction height is too high. |
Correct or modify the bottom valve condition. Or modify the suction pipe to reduce the suction lift height. |
3. The pressure gauge shows pressure, yet the water pump still isn't delivering water. |
The discharge pipe has too much resistance, the rotation direction is incorrect, and the impeller is blocked. The pump speed is insufficient. |
Inspect the short water pipe and the inspection motor. Remove the pipe connector, clean the impeller, and increase the rotational speed of the pump shaft. |
4. The flow rate is below the design requirements. |
The pump is blocked. The sealing ring is excessively worn. The rotational speed is insufficient. |
Clean the water pump and pipes, and replace the sealing rings. Increase the rotational speed of the pump shaft. |
5. The pump is consuming excessive power. |
The packing gland is too tight. The impeller is worn due to overheating of the stuffing box. The water supply from the pump has increased. |
Loosen the packing gland. Replace the impeller. Increase the resistance in the discharge pipe to reduce the flow rate. |
6. The pump makes unusual noises internally and fails to draw water. |
The flow rate is too high, the resistance inside the suction pipe is excessive, and air is leaking into the suction area. The temperature of the liquid being pumped is too high. |
Increase the resistance inside the discharge pipe to reduce the flow rate; inspect the pump and the piping. Check the foot valve, reduce the suction height, seal any air leaks, and lower the suction height. |
7. Pump vibration. |
The pump shaft and the motor are not aligned on the same centerline, or the pump bearing is bent. |
Align the centerlines of the pump and motor shafts. |
8. Bearing overheating. |
Without oil, the pump and motor shafts are not aligned on the same centerline. |
Keep going. Align the shaft centerline and inspect or clean the bearing housing. |
Installation, Removal, Startup, Operation, and Shutdown of GC-Type Horizontal Multistage Boiler Feed Pumps
1. Loading and unloading sequence
1) Securely install the sealing ring <9> onto the water inlet section (8).
2) Pass the shaft <9>, fitted with bushing A <5> and key, through the inlet section <8> and push it into the impeller (10). Then, place a paper gasket on the middle section, install the middle section (11), and push in the second impeller. Repeat the above steps to assemble all the impellers and middle sections.
3) Install the balance ring (14) onto the discharge section (13).
4) Attach the effluent section <13> to the middle section, then use the tension bolts <18> to securely fasten together the inlet section, the middle section, and the effluent section.
5) Install the balance disc <15> and bushing B <17>.
6) Install the paper gasket onto the tail cover, then attach the tail cover to the water outlet section. Next, sequentially install the packing and packing ring (7) as well as the packing gland (6) into the packing chambers of both the water inlet section and the tail cover.
7) Install the bearing housing <4> onto the suction section and the tail cover respectively, and secure them with bolts.
8) Insert the ball bearings〈3〉 and secure them respectively with the shaft sleeve nut〈1〉 and the round nut〈20〉.
9) Insert an appropriate amount of grease into the bearing housing, place the paper gasket over the bearing cap (2), and then secure the bearing cap to the bearing housing using screws.
10) Install the return pipe, coupling components, and all square plug screws.
11) Disassembly should be performed in the reverse order of the steps described above.
Preparations before installation:
1) Inspect the pump and motor;
2) Prepare tools and lifting equipment;
3) Inspect the machine’s foundation;
2. Installation Sequence
1) The entire pump set, including the base, has been delivered to the site with the motor already installed. When leveling the base, there is no need to remove the pump and motor.
2) Place the base on the foundation, and insert wedge-shaped iron blocks near the anchor bolts to raise the base by approximately 20–40 millimeters, preparing it for leveling before filling with cement.
3) Use a level to check the horizontal base of the pedestal. After leveling it, tighten the anchor bolts and fill the base with cement.
4) After the cement has dried and hardened for 3-4 days, check the levelness again.
5) Clean off any dirt from the supporting surface of the base, as well as from the flat surfaces of the pump feet and motor feet. Then place the motor and pump onto the base.
6) Adjust the pump shaft to be水平. After achieving proper leveling, tighten the nuts appropriately to prevent any movement. Once adjustment is complete, install the motor. Place iron plates under areas that are not level, and leave a certain gap between the pump and the coupling.
7) Place a level on the coupling and check whether the pump shaft centerline coincides with the motor shaft centerline. If they do not coincide, place thin metal shims under the feet of both the motor and the pump to ensure that the outer circles of the two couplings are flush with the level. Then, remove some of the shims and replace them with a single, planed shim plate. Finally, recheck the installation to confirm that everything is properly aligned.
To check the installation accuracy, use feeler gauges at several opposite positions to measure the clearance between the two coupling planes. The difference between the maximum and minimum clearances around the circumference of the coupling planes must not exceed 0.3 millimeters, and the difference between the upper and lower or left and right positions along the centerlines at both ends must not exceed 0.1 millimeter.
3. Starting and Stopping:
1. Remove all oil from the shaft and other oil-coated parts.
2. Clean the bearing and shaft housing with gasoline, then wipe clean with cotton gauze.
3. Add calcium-based grease into the bearing housing.
4. Start the test. Turn on the motor and check the rotation direction of the motor. It is strictly prohibited for the pump to rotate in reverse, which could cause the sleeve nut to loosen.
5. Pour water into the pump or use a vacuum pump to draw water in.
6. Close the valve on the discharge pipe and the pressure gauge cock.
7. After the above process is completed, start the motor and open the pressure gauge cock.
8. When the pump is running at its normal speed, the pressure gauge should indicate the appropriate pressure. Then, open the vacuum gauge cock and gradually open the gate valve on the drain line until the desired pressure is reached.
9. When stopping the pump, slowly close the gate valve on the drain line and the vacuum gauge cock. Then stop the motor and close the pressure gauge cock.
10. When the pump is to be discontinued for an extended period, it should be disassembled, all parts thoroughly dried, and then properly stored after applying anti-rust oil to the sliding surfaces.
Operation:
1. Pay attention to the temperature of the pump bearing; it must not exceed the ambient temperature by more than 35℃. The maximum allowable temperature is 75℃.
2. While the pump is running, be sure to pay attention to adding lubricant regularly.
3. The normal leakage rate in the stuffing box should be about 10–20 drops per minute, and the tightness of the packing gland should be adjusted accordingly at all times.
4. Regularly inspect the coupling and pay attention to checking the temperature rise of the motor bearings.
5. During operation, if any noise or unusual sound occurs, stop the machine immediately and check the cause.

Q
What is your typical delivery time?
A
Models in stock can be shipped the next day at the latest. All others are custom-made, with lead times generally ranging from 7 to 90 days depending on the product size and project specifics. Please contact our sales manager for details: 0731-88632200 。
Q
Do you have centrifugal pumps in stock?
A
Centrifugal pumps come in numerous models and configurations. Except for a small number of high-volume, standard models that are in stock, the vast majority are not stocked and are customized products. We need to select a pump based on your site's flow rate, head, media temperature, pH value, and installation conditions, etc., to determine the pump model and configuration before we can submit an order to the factory for production.
Q
What information should I provide when requesting a quote?
A
Generally, to obtain an accurate quotation, we recommend providing us with the following information: pump flow rate, head, on-site operating voltage and frequency, temperature, pH value, and solid particle content of the fluid being conveyed, and on-site installation conditions (horizontal or vertical installation), etc.
If you are not sure, don't worry, our business managers will assist you in determining this.
Q
What products do you mainly produce?
A
Zhonglian Pump Industry manufactures various large industrial centrifugal pumps. Main products include: self-balancing multi-stage pumps, multi-stage centrifugal pumps, single-stage centrifugal pumps, split-case pumps, chemical pumps, submersible pumps, pipeline pumps, long-shaft pumps, condensate pumps, etc.
Q
Why is it so slow to get a price quote?
A
Because centrifugal pumps are non-standard customized products with many models, the price range is also very large. Even for the same model, the price difference is also very large due to different materials and configurations. Taking the most common water pump accessory—the impeller—as an example, the price of a stainless steel impeller is several times that of a cast iron impeller. Therefore, we need to clarify the relevant information to give you an accurate price. Normally, if you provide relatively comprehensive information, we can quote within 5 minutes.
