The pump impeller refers both to the wheel disc equipped with moving blades, which is a component of the rotor in an impulse steam turbine, and to the collective term for the wheel disc together with the rotating blades mounted on it.

Pump impeller classification:
The impeller of a centrifugal pump mainly comes in the following four types: (a) closed; (b) front-half-open; (c) rear-half-open; (d) open.

1. Closed impeller
It consists of blades and front and rear cover plates. Closed impellers have higher efficiency but are more difficult to manufacture, making them the most commonly used type in centrifugal pumps. They are suitable for conveying clean liquids with low viscosity, such as clear water and solutions, that are free of particles. An example is the IS horizontal single-stage single-suction centrifugal pump.
2. Semi-open impeller
Generally, there are two main structural types. The first is the front-half-open type, which consists of a rear cover plate and blades. This type of impeller has relatively low efficiency; to improve its efficiency, it must be equipped with a sealing ring featuring an adjustable clearance. The second type is the rear-half-open impeller, which comprises a front cover plate and blades. Since it can use sealing rings identical to those employed in closed impellers, its efficiency is essentially the same as that of closed impellers. Moreover, in addition to conveying liquid, the blades in this type of impeller also serve a sealing function (via back vanes or auxiliary impellers). The semi-open impeller is particularly suitable for pumping liquids containing suspended solids, fibers, and other particulate matter. Semi-open impellers are easier to manufacture, lower in cost, and highly adaptable. As a result, they are increasingly being used in centrifugal pumps for oil refining and chemical processing, and are also employed for conveying clean water and liquids that closely resemble clean water.
3. Open impeller
A rotor with only blades and blade stiffeners, lacking front and rear cover plates (an open-type impeller with a smaller number of blades—typically 2 to 5 blades). This type of impeller has low efficiency and is used relatively infrequently. It is primarily employed for conveying liquids with higher viscosities as well as slurry-like fluids, and is most commonly found in sewage pump impellers.
The blades of centrifugal pump impellers are generally backward-curved. There are two types of blades: cylindrical and twisted. Using twisted blades can reduce the blade load, improve the centrifugal pump's suction performance, and enhance its resistance to cavitation. However, twisted blades are more difficult to manufacture and have higher production costs.
Centrifugal pumps used in oil refining and chemical processing require impellers that are either cast or fully welded as monolithic units. Welded impellers have emerged and are increasingly used in specialized centrifugal pumps for chemical applications, particularly those made from metallic materials with poor casting properties (such as iron and its alloys). Both the geometric accuracy and surface finish of welded impellers are superior to those of cast impellers, which helps enhance the efficiency of centrifugal pumps.
