The claw-type coupling is also known as the plum-blossom coupling, and the claw-shaped elastic coupling is referred to as the elastic block coupling. It uses several pin-like elements made of non-metallic materials, which are inserted into mating holes between the two halves of the coupling and the inner surface of the outer ring. Torque is transmitted through these pins, thereby connecting the two coupling halves. The claw-type coupling consists of two metal claw discs and an elastomeric element. The two metal claw discs are typically made of 45 steel; however, aluminum alloy may be used in applications requiring high load sensitivity.

Features of claw couplings:
(1) It transmits large torque, and for the same torque, its rotary diameter is generally smaller than that of gear couplings. It has a compact size and light weight, and can partially replace gear couplings.
(2) Compared with gear couplings, it has a simpler structure, fewer component parts, is easier to manufacture, and does not require gear-machining equipment.
① The intermediate slider of the claw-type coupling is made of cloth-reinforced bakelite or nylon.
② Small in size, lightweight, simple in structure, easy to install, and low in price—commonly used in low-power applications;
③ Low inertial force, suitable for connecting two shafts with moderate torque, relatively high rotational speed, and no abrupt impacts.
Moreover, nylon sliders transmit relatively small torque but are well-suited for high-speed operation and do not require lubrication.
④ The permissible relative radial displacement is (0.01d + 0.25) mm, where d is the shaft diameter (in mm); the permissible relative angular displacement is 0 degrees and 40 minutes; the additional radial force exerted by the coupling is (0.1 to 0.3)P.
⑤ The standard code for the pump industry is Bl104. Its maximum allowable torque is 850 N·m, and its maximum shaft diameter is 50 mm.
