Introduction to the Structure of SA-Type Single-Stage Stainless Steel Double-Suction Split-Casing Pump

The SA-type stainless steel split-case pump is horizontally mounted. The pump casing is split horizontally along the axis line: the upper part is the pump cover, and the lower part is the pump body. Both the suction port and the discharge port are located on the pump body below the pump shaft axis, with their centerlines perpendicular to the shaft axis. During maintenance, there is no need to disconnect the inlet and outlet pipelines—simply lift off the pump cover to remove the rotor assembly. The shaft seal can be either a soft packing seal or a mechanical seal.

Rotation direction of the stainless steel center-open pump: When viewed from the motor end toward the pump, the SA-type stainless steel double-suction pump rotates counterclockwise—that is, the suction port is on the left and the discharge port is on the right. Alternatively, upon user request, the drive end can be moved to the other end of the pump; in this case, both the rotation direction and the directions of the suction and discharge ports will be reversed compared to the above description.

Material of main components: The flow-path components of the stainless steel split-case pump are all made of cast iron. If required by the user, the impeller can also be manufactured from cast steel or brass, but this must be specified in the purchase contract.

Package scope: The package includes the pump, motor, and coupling. For pumps with an inlet size ≤ 200 mm, a common base is provided; for all other pumps, no base is included.

SA Type Single-Stage Stainless Steel Double-Suction Split-Casing Pump: Assembly, Disassembly, and Installation

Assembly and Disassembly of Center-Open Pumps in Stainless Steel

1. Assemble the rotor components: Sequentially mount the impeller, shaft sleeve, shaft sleeve nut, packing sleeve, packing ring, packing gland, water stop ring, and bearing assembly onto the pump shaft. Then, slide on the double-suction sealing ring and finally install the coupling.

2. Install the rotor assembly onto the pump body, adjust the axial position of the impeller to the middle between the double-suction sealing rings on both sides, and secure it in place. Then, tighten the bearing housing cover together with the set screws.

3. Install the packing, place the gasket between the split halves, and then secure the pump cover by inserting and tightening the pin at the end of the screw rod. Next, tighten the pump cover nuts, and finally install the packing gland. However, do not compress the packing too tightly—excessive compression can cause the sleeve to overheat and increase power consumption. On the other hand, do not compress it too loosely either; if the packing is too loose, liquid leakage will increase significantly, reducing the pump’s efficiency.

After assembly is complete, manually rotate the pump shaft. There should be no rubbing or scraping, and the rotation should be smooth and even. To disassemble, simply reverse the above-mentioned assembly sequence.

Install

1. The water pump and motor should be free of damage.

2. The installation height of the pump, plus the hydraulic losses in the suction piping and its velocity head, must not exceed the allowable suction vacuum height specified in the pump’s data sheet. The foundation dimensions shall conform to the installation dimensions of the pump unit.

3. Installation Sequence

① Place the pump on a concrete foundation equipped with anchor bolts. Adjust the level by using wedge-shaped shims placed between the pump and the foundation, and then tighten the anchor bolts appropriately to prevent any movement.

② Pour concrete after the foundation and pump base feet are in place.

③ After the concrete has fully hardened, tighten the anchor bolts and recheck the pump’s levelness.

④ Correct the concentricity between the motor shaft and the pump shaft. Ensure that the two shafts are aligned in a straight line. The permissible tolerance for coaxiality on the outer circumference of the coupling is 0.1 mm, and the permissible tolerance for unevenness of the end-face clearance around the circumference is 0.3 mm. (After connecting the inlet and outlet pipelines and conducting a trial run, re-check both parameters again; they should still meet the above requirements.)

⑤ After verifying that the motor rotation direction matches the pump rotation direction, install the coupling and connecting pins.

4. The inlet and outlet pipelines should be supported by separate brackets and must not be supported by the pump body itself.

5. The joint between the pump and the piping system must ensure good air tightness, especially for the inlet piping, which must be strictly leak-free and free of any potential air pockets in the installation.

6. If the stainless steel double-suction pump is installed above the inlet water level, a foot valve can generally be installed to facilitate priming and start-up. Alternatively, a vacuum priming method can also be employed.

7. After the pump and the discharge pipeline, a gate valve and a check valve are generally required (a check valve is not necessary for heads below 20 meters). The check valve should be installed behind the gate valve. The installation method described above applies to pump units that do not come with a common base.

When installing a pump equipped with a common base, use wedge-shaped shims to adjust the level of the unit by aligning the base with the concrete foundation. Then, pour concrete between them. The installation principles and requirements are the same as those for units not equipped with a common base.

Start, stop, and run

1. Starting and Stopping

① Before starting, the pump’s rotor should rotate smoothly and evenly when turned.

② Close the outlet gate valve and fill the pump with water (if there is no foot valve, use a vacuum pump to evacuate and draw in water). Ensure that the pump is completely filled with water and free of any air pockets.

③ If the pump is equipped with a vacuum gauge or pressure gauge, first close the rotary valve connected to the pump before starting the motor. Once the pump speed has stabilized, reopen the valve. Then gradually open the outlet gate valve. If the flow rate is too high, slightly close the gate valve to adjust it accordingly; conversely, if the flow rate is too low, open the gate valve wider.

④ Tighten the compression nuts on the packing gland evenly until the liquid starts to leak out in drops, while paying close attention to any temperature rise in the packing chamber.

⑤ When stopping the pump, first close the stopcocks on the vacuum gauge and pressure gauge, as well as the gate valve on the discharge pipeline, and then disconnect the power supply to the motor. If the ambient temperature is low, open the square screw plug at the bottom of the pump body to prevent it from freezing and cracking.

⑥ When the pump is to be discontinued for an extended period, disassemble it, wipe off any water from the components, apply rust-preventive oil to the machined surfaces, and store it properly.

2. Operation

① The maximum temperature of the pump bearing should not exceed 75°C.

② The amount of calcium-based grease used for lubricating bearings should ideally occupy between one-third and one-half of the bearing housing space.

③ When the packing wears out, you can tighten the packing gland appropriately. If the wear is excessive, the packing should be replaced.

④ Regularly inspect the coupling components and pay attention to the temperature rise of the motor bearings.

⑤ During operation, if you detect abnormal noises or other unusual sounds, you should immediately stop the machine, inspect the cause, and eliminate the issue.

⑥ The pump’s rotational speed must not be arbitrarily increased; however, it can be operated at a lower speed. For example, if the rated rotational speed of this pump is n, the flow rate is Q, the head is H, and the shaft power is N, and the rotational speed is reduced to n1, the corresponding flow rate, head, and shaft power after the reduction will be Q1, H1, and N1, respectively. The relationships among these parameters can be converted using the following formulas: Q1 = (n1/n)Q H1 = (n1/n)²H N1 = (n1/n)³N

Q

What is your typical delivery time?

A

Models in stock can be shipped the next day at the latest. All others are custom-made, with lead times generally ranging from 7 to 90 days depending on the product size and project specifics. Please contact our sales manager for details: 0731-88632200 。

Q

Do you have centrifugal pumps in stock?

A

Centrifugal pumps come in numerous models and configurations. Except for a small number of high-volume, standard models that are in stock, the vast majority are not stocked and are customized products. We need to select a pump based on your site's flow rate, head, media temperature, pH value, and installation conditions, etc., to determine the pump model and configuration before we can submit an order to the factory for production.

Q

What information should I provide when requesting a quote?

A

Generally, to obtain an accurate quotation, we recommend providing us with the following information: pump flow rate, head, on-site operating voltage and frequency, temperature, pH value, and solid particle content of the fluid being conveyed, and on-site installation conditions (horizontal or vertical installation), etc.

If you are not sure, don't worry, our business managers will assist you in determining this.

Q

What products do you mainly produce?

A

Zhonglian Pump Industry manufactures various large industrial centrifugal pumps. Main products include: self-balancing multi-stage pumps, multi-stage centrifugal pumps, single-stage centrifugal pumps, split-case pumps, chemical pumps, submersible pumps, pipeline pumps, long-shaft pumps, condensate pumps, etc.

Q

Could you help me with the selection?

A

Certainly! If the water pump model is not selected accurately, there will be big problems. If you choose a smaller one, it won't meet your needs; if you choose a larger one, it will waste electricity and fuel, increasing your costs.

Q

Why is it so slow to get a price quote?

A

Because centrifugal pumps are non-standard customized products with many models, the price range is also very large. Even for the same model, the price difference is also very large due to different materials and configurations. Taking the most common water pump accessory—the impeller—as an example, the price of a stainless steel impeller is several times that of a cast iron impeller. Therefore, we need to clarify the relevant information to give you an accurate price. Normally, if you provide relatively comprehensive information, we can quote within 5 minutes.
